Veteran actor-director Vijaya Nirmala aged 73 passed away due to cardiac arrest on late Wednesday after she was admitted at Continental Hospital in Gachibowli where she took her last breath.
Entire film industry expressed grief over her death news. Her body will be brought to her residence at Nanakramguda at 11 AM on Thursday and final rites will be held on Friday.
Vijaya Nirmala entered film industry as an actor but later worked as director and producer. She directed 44 Telugu films. She entered into the Guinness Book of Records as the female director for most number of films in 2002.
She received the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her contributions to Tollywood in 2008. She and her co star Savitri were the only female directors to direct the actor Sivaji Ganesan.
Vijaya Nirmal was born in Tamil Nadu on February 20, 1946 and her father worked in film production.
Vijaya Nirmala made her debut with 1950 film Machcha Rekhai at the age of seven as child artiste. She entered into Telugu industry through Rangula Ratnam. She worked opposite Prem Nazir in 1964 and became a star with Malayalam hit Bhargavi Nilayam. She worked with him again in 1967 for Udhyogastha directed by P Venu.
Vijaya Nirmala met Krishna, her second husband on the sets of 1967 film Saakshi which was her second film in Telugu. Krishna and Vijaya Nirmala worked together in 47 films. She got her interest in direction from Saakshi.
She acted in more than 200 films including 25 film each in Tamil and Malayalam. Vijaya Nirmala’s first son is Naresh who is a well known actor. With Krishna, She had a daughter, Manjula and son Mahesh Babu.
She made her debut as director with a Malayalam film with Rs 3 lakh budget. In Telugu she made directorial debut with Meena. She directed 40 Telugu films, one debut Malayalam film and Kungumachimizh in Tamil.
She also made her debut on small screen with Pelli Kanuka from Balaji Telefilms. Later she launched her own banner Vijaya Krishna Movies and produced 15 films under own banner.
