United States President Donald Trump’s announcement to endorse Jerusalem as the capital of Israel was marked by a protest rally in Jakarta, Indonesia on Sunday featuring thousands of members of a political party.
The Prosperous Justice Party’ members who held the rally denouncing Donald Trump announcement on Jerusalem called it a human rights violation that crossed the limits of religion, as per a report from ANI.
Banners were displayed by scores of people protesting Donald Trump’s stance on Jerusalem.
Sohibul Iman, the chairman of the Prosperous Justice Party appealed to Joko Widodo, the Indonesian President to lead other member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in putting pressure on Donald Trump to take back his decision on the US stand on Jerusalem.
Jerusalem has been the bone of contention for long as it is home to three religions – Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Both Israel and Palestine have claimed the holy city to be part of their respective nations.
The status of Jerusalem has therefore been one of the major obstacles to strike a peace deal between Israel and Palestine.
Donald Trump, unlike his predecessors has gone ahead by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The US President’s decision has indirectly provoked all the Islamic countries who have been strongly backing Palestine while despising Israel, a country formed primarily for Jews who have been historically seen as enemies of Muslims.
Donald Trump said: “Jerusalem is today, and must remain, a place where Jews pray at the Western Wall, where Christians walk the Stations of the Cross, and where Muslims worship at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
“However, through all of these years, presidents representing the United States have declined to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. In fact, we have declined to acknowledge any Israeli capital at all.
“But today, we finally acknowledge the obvious: that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital. This is nothing more, or less, than a recognition of reality. It is also the right thing to do. It’s something that has to be done.”
Donald Trump said that he has asked the US State Department to brace up for shifting the American embassy based in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He also said that the US will start the process of recruiting architects, engineers, and planners to build the new US embassy in Jerusalem.
