Telangana govt to speed up 2BHK free housing scheme for poor

Facing flak over its delay in implementation of the 2BHK free housing scheme for the poor, the Telangana government on Monday made an effort to speed up as its ministers held a meeting with officers and contractors involved in the populist project.

The 2BHK free housing scheme has been one of the tall promises made by Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao. Whether it will be practically possible to implement without hurting the state coffers much will have to be seen in the course of time.

In their meeting with the officers and contractors, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, Housing Minister A. Indrakaran Reddy, Energy Minister G. Jagadish Reddy and Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy held a brief discussion over the construction of double bed room flats.

The ministers ordered the officers to wrap up the 2BHK free housing project as early as possible.

The Telangana government claims to have taken up relaxations and other measures in the project to bring down the costs of construction.

A Indrakaran Reddy said that the cost of construction for a single unit would be lowered by Rs 50,000 following the government’s relaxations. Contractors would be allowed to buy sand from quarries in the nearby districts if needed and would be supplied cement at a reduced price of Rs 235 per bag.
