Supreme Court grants bail to Former Union Minister P Chidambaram, released form Tihar jail

Former Union Minsiter P Chidambaram who was arrested in INX Media Case was released from Tihar jail after 106 days after the Supreme Court granted him bail on Wednesday.

Most of the Congress workers reached the Tihar jail to receive former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram. The Supreme Court set aside the Delhi High Court’s order that refused to grant bail to him and directed him not to tamper the evidence and influence the witnesses in the case.

Karti Chidambaram expressed his happiness over his father’s release from Tihar jail and said that the Congress MP will attend the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament on Thursday.

He said: “I am very happy that he is going to be back home. I am extremely relieved,”.

The court ordered him not to give a press interview or make public statement with regard to the case and also directed to furnish a bail bond of Rs 2 lakh plus two sureties of the same amount.

Chidambaram had sought the bail in a case related to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to INX Media to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during his tenure as the Finance Minister.

The CBI had filed a corruption case in May 2019 in this regard. The ED had also lodged a money laundering case against him later in this year.

He was arrested by the CBI on August 21, 2019 in the INX Media corruption case and he was granted bail two months later by the Supreme Court. He was arrested by the ED on October 16 in the money laundering case.
