The Real Reason Why Election Commission Gave Cycle To Akhilesh Yadav and not Mulayam

In a unique case of a son stepping into father’ shoes, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday was given permission to use the Samajwadi Party cycle as his symbol, with his father Mulayam Singh Yadav losing out.

The Election Commission concluded that the group being led by Akhilesh Yadav is the Samajwadi Party and thus had the right to use the cycle symbol. It was Akhilesh’s 77-year-old father Mulayam Singh Yadav who founded the Samajwadi Party 25 years back.

Mulayam was earlier quoted as saying that he would accept the final decision of the Election Commission on poll symbol issue. The EC had to intervene in the internal party war after two factions, one led by Mulayam and the other by Akhilesh laid claim to the cycle.

The decision of the EC means Akhilesh Yadav can use the cycle symbol for the upcoming UP Assembly elections 2017. Ram Gopal Yadav, who was representing Akhilesh’s group, was happy at the outcome. “It was the toughest fight of my political career. I am happy that the election Commission decided in our favour. We now want to win the elections,” Ram Gopal Yadav was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.

EC’s decision was also welcomed by the Congress party.  “We congratulate Akhilesh on being allotted the cycle symbol. Election Commission has taken a judicious decision in record time,” Congress spokesman RPN Singh said.

RJD head Lalu Prasad Yadav also felt it was the right decision. “I congratulate Akhilesh Yadav; would appeal Netaji to give his blessings to Akhilesh, this is country’s election not just UP,” Lalu Prasad Yadav was also quoted as saying in the Express report.

Meanwhile, the bitterness between father and son continued as Mulayam Singh Yadav hit out at Akhilesh for overlooking the Muslim community and added that he is ready to take on his son over the matter. Mulayam, who has the strong backing of the community, went on to add that Akhilesh Yadav had a ‘negative approach’ towards them.
