Prime Minister Narendra Modi felicitated NDA candidate and former Union Minister Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu on getting elected as the 13th Vice President of India.
BJP President Amit Shah was also present alongside Narendra Modi at Venkaiah Naidu’s residence in New Delhi. Venkaiah Naidu’s wife Ushamma was also present during the felicitation.
The 68-year-old Venkaiah Naidu clinched 516 votes to defeat opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi who collected 244 votes out of the total 760 valid votes in the Vice President Elections 2017.
Venkaiah Naidu hails from a modest agricultural family based in Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh. In early nineties, Venkaiah Naidu made a name for himself by serving as the BJP spokesperson, soon he became the party national president, and had also been a Union Minister in two NDA governments.
The 13th Vice President of India elect Venkaiah Naidu had entered into politics in 1972 through the Jai Andhra Movement. In 1973, he joined the ABVP and thereafter in the Jai Prakash Narayan founded Janata Party until the formation of the BJP in 1980.
