All passengers safe after Air India plane veers off taxiway at Kochi airport

A Kochi-bound Air India plane veered off the taxiway at the Kochi airport on the early morning hours of Tuesday.

The plane was carrying 102 passengers along with six crew members are safe after the incident. After the plane veered off the taxiway, the plane was evacuated.

The Abu Dhabi-Kochi Air India Express IX 442 skidded off the taxiway and its wheels got struck in a nearby drain at Cochin International Airport and passengers had emergency evacuation.

Luckily no one was injured in this incident. The incident was supposed to happen due to heavy rain and the 102 passengers got struck in the rain storm water drain on the side of taxiway which is opposite the international terminal while entering the bay.

All the passengers and crew evacuated the flight from the doors with the help of normal step ladder.

It was suspected that the plane took a turn at least 90 meters ahead of the marked spot. As the incident took place ahead of the runway no other flight service was affected.

This incident took place around 2:40 am on Tuesday morning when the Air India Express IX452 was approaching the parking bay. It was Abu Dhabi to Kochi flight.

The nose-wheel of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft also collapsed after the plane went off the parking bay.

After the incident, the airplane has been grounded to do an internal inquiry and also for probe by the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) which was initiated.
