According to a state media in China, the city of Wuhan is building a new 1,000 bed hospital in a rapid pace to treat coronavirus victims, mobilizing machinery to make it available by early next week.
Atleast 25 people were killed and more than 800 others are infected as said by the China government on Friday. World Health Organisation declared it as an emergency but not as international epidemic concern.
Majority of the cases are reported in Wuhan, a central Chinese city and the virus is believed to be originated last year.
The new hospital is being built around a holiday complex which was originally intended for the local workers, set in gardens by a lake on the city outskirts. 1,000 beds will be set up in the prefabricated buildings.
On Thursday night, building machinery including 35 diggers and 10 bulldozers arrived at the site to work rapidly and make the facility available by Monday.
As per the report: “The construction of this project is to solve the shortage of existing medical resources.
“Because it will be prefabricated buildings, it will not only be built fast but it also won’t cost much.”
The construction of hospital is based on the experience of Beijing in 2003 when the city fought with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS epidemic) in which 774 people were killed and spread to nearly 30 countries.
Xiaotangshan hospital was built in the northern suburbs of Beijing in just a week at that time and it treated one seventh of SARS patients in just two months. It was built by 7000 workers and was mainly designed to take people who are recovering from SARS and to relieve pressure on the hospitals.
700 SARS patients were treated in the end.
