Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai airports on high alert on possible hijack attempt

A high alert has been issued at the Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai international airports over information about a possible hijack attempt of a plane from one of the locations.

Security has been beefed up at the three international airports after Mumbai Police were mailed by a woman about the hijack plot.

The email which was shared by the Mumbai Police with all intelligence and security agencies, talks about the woman overhearing half a dozen boys discussing about a possible plane hijack attempt at the airports.

The woman mailed the Mumbai Police from Hyderabad on Saturday night in which she mentions to have overheard that 23 people had planned to carry out the hijacking and bomb blasts after splitting into groups.

Following this, a meeting was convened of all the concerned authorities of the three airports after it was found that the intelligence alert was specific and actionable.

According to a PTI report, CISF Director General O P Singh revealed that the security apparatus at the three airports have been placed on an enhanced alert with protocols stepped up.

Since morning, special anti-sabotage sweeps have been carried out at the three airports.

Passengers are undergoing an enhanced level of frisking while baggage scanning is being done meticulously along with tightened pre-emabarkation checks and patrols near the airports.

Sniffer dog squads have been called in by the CISF along with quick reaction teams to carry out sanitization drills at the three airports while airlines have been advised to remain more vigilant.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the police are investigating the email content and looking to get in touch with its sender.
