Mexico hit by earthquake of 8.2 magnitude kills 15

A powerful earthquake of 8.2 magnitude strikes the southern Mexico on late Thursday, which killed at least 13 people.

The earthquake also triggered a tsunami alert and the president said that this is the biggest earthquake in a century.

The earthquake hit the pacific offshore at 11:49 pm which is about 100 kilometers from the coastal town of Tonala, in far southern Chiapas State as said by the Mexico’s seismologic service.

Enrique Pena Nieto, Mexico President addressed from the National Disaster Prevention Center’s headquarters said that: “It was a major earthquake in scale and magnitude, the strongest in the past 100 years,” while he was supervising the emergency response.

This earthquake is similar to 1985 earthquake that killed more than 10,000 people in the city and was the most destructive earthquake ever. The US Geological Survey found the earthquake magnitude as 8.1.

The earthquake shook a large region and the tremors were felt even in North Mexico City also which is 800 km from the epicenter. After tremors were felt, the people ran out of their homes as buildings trembled and swayed.

The Mexico President said that three people were killed in Chiapas in the collapsed buildings. The governor reported that two children were killed in neighbouring state Tabasco.

One of them was killed by a collapsing wall and another is an infant who was on a respirator who died after the quake triggered a power outage.

As per the reports from Ricardo de la Cruz, the head of the emergency response agency 10 people were killed in the state of Oaxaca and the worst destruction happened in Juchitan.

The death toll is expected to rise. Some of the houses collapsed when the residents were inside them. This was reported in a TV news channel Milenio.

In Juchitan, a hotel collapsed badly, the town hall caved in and houses were badly damaged.

The Mexico President, Pena Nieto said that 50 million people felt the quake out of 120 million people. The tremors were also felt in most parts of Guatemala which borders Chiapas.

Because of earthquake, Mexican officials declared holiday for schools on Friday in 11 states so that officials could inspect damage.

Many people ran out of their buildings in whatever attire they were in pajamas after they heard earthquake warning sirens just before midnight.

The earthquake hit at a depth of 69.7 km as per the reports from USGS. A tsunami alert was issued initially across a huge stretch of coastline from central Mexico through Central America down to Ecuador. But it was lifted after many hours of the earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that a tsunami of more than 10 feet was possible, but finally the earthquake caused rough seas and not tsunami.

After the Mexico was hit by earthquake in 1985, The Mexican authorities follow a stricter building code and they also developed an alert system that uses sensors placed on the coasts.

Mexico is among the five tectonic plates and its movement makes it a seismically active countries in the world.
