Incheon becomes only the third South Korean city to cross three million in population

Incheon has registered itself as the third largest city in South Korea as its population recently crossed over three million, an unusual record for a Korean city in crossing the population mark in 36 years.

The city located in northwestern South Korea is now only behind South Korea’s capital Seoul and Busan as far as the population is concerned. Overall population of South Korea is around 50 million.

It is indeed good news for the country which has been affected by low fertility rates, causing a gradual dip in population.

Incheon Metropolitan City Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok talking about the historical population breakthrough said: “Incheon is the cradle of the modern history of Korea, starting point of its future growth, and the city where foreign people first set their feet.

“We will open the new age of Incheon’s sovereignty to continuously grow as a global city.”

In the US, which has a population over 300 million, only a couple of cities New York and Los Angeles have a population of over three million each.

Incheon, now can also draw comparisons with not just the two US cities but also other world cities like Berlin in Germany which has around 3.5 million population and Madrid in Span which has around 3.2 million population.

The current population trend in South Korea is seeing a rapidly aging society which can weaken the country on all fronts. With Incheon’s population growth, hope has returned again after a long gap.

The population increase n Incheon has been mainly attributed to the migration of people from other parts of the country.

On the other side, there has been a population decline observed in Seoul and Busan.

Incheon is also said to see an increase in population owing to the affordable residential environment it provides when compared to neighbouring Seoul.

The emerging city has also seen new job creations along with convenient transportation that has attracted South Koreans to settle in the city which had a population of a little under 5,000 in 1883 when it first became an international port.

Incheon has also grown to become one of the major cities in the Northeast Asia region courtesy of the international airport which only came up in 2001 along with the construction of Korea’s first free economic zone.
