Here’s what Pranab Mukherjee has to say about Ramjas College

The debate over the ruckus and violent clashes in Delhi University’s Ramjas College continues. And none other than President Pranab Mukherjee took up the issue on Thursday.

While delivering the 6th KS Rajamony Memorial Lecture on the topic ‘India@70’ on Thursday in Kochi, Kerala, President Pranab Mukherjee said, “Those in universities must engage in reasoned discussion and debate rather than propagate a culture of unrest. It is tragic to see them caught in the vortex of violence and disquiet,”

He added that freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed to every Indian by the Constitution. “There should be no room in India for the intolerant Indian,” the President was quoted as saying in a Times of India report.

Ramjas College has seen lot of violence of late. There have been clashes between AISA and the ABVP after JNU students Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid were invited to address a seminar on ‘Culture of Protests’.

The President warned law makers over taking people for granted. “They (law makers) must focus on the fundamental task of law making and raising of issues of concern to the people. The trust placed by the people in the political system and those elected should not be betrayed,” he stated.

On violence against women in society, Pranab Mukherjee added, “When we brutalise a woman, we wound the soul of our civilisation. The trust placed by the people in the political system and those elected should not be betrayed. A sense of national purpose and patriotism alone can lift our nation on to the road of sustained progress and prosperity,” he added.

Following the Ramjas controversy, Lady Shri Ram College student Gurmehar Kaur launched a social media campaign against the ABVP, after which she allegedly faced death and rape threats, forcing her to withdraw from the campaign.
