Ethiopian airlines flight to Nairobi crashes, 149 passengers on board killed

Ethiopian airlines flight to Nairobi – Boeing 737 passenger jet, crashed on early Sunday killing 157 including 149 passengers and eight crew members on board.

Ethiopian airlines Flight ET crashed 302 near the town of Bishoftu, 62 km southeast of capital Addis Ababa. The plane was a Boeing 737-800 MAX, with registration number ET-AVJ.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight left Bole airport in Addis Ababa at 8:38 local time, it lost contact with the control tower just a few minutes at around 8:44 am.

The airlines released a statement that reads: “Search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties”.

The Prime Minister’s office sent condolences via Twitter to the families who lost their dear ones in the crash.

Ethiopian is one of the biggest carriers on the continent by fleet size and it carried 10.6 million passengers last year.

The last major crash took place in January 2010, when a flight from Beirut went down shortly after take off.
