Engineering student dies after illegal abortion in Hyderabad

A second year Engineering student died of illegal abortion at a private hospital in Vanasthalipuram, Kamala Nagar area in Hyderabad on Monday.

The deceased identified as Harika aged 21 years died of excessive bleeding and when her condition got worse, the staff of the private maternity hospital tried to shift her to another hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Harika’s body was shifted to Osmania hospital for autopsy. She was joined in the hospital for abortion by her lover Madhu.

Madhu and the doctor who performed the abortion were arrested for questioning by the police officers. The primary investigations revealed that Madhu deposited Rs 20,000 in the hospital to perform abortion of five-month old pregnancy.

Police are also trying to find out whether the hospital violated guidelines of the Indian Medical Council and District Medical and Health Officer for abortions.

The girl belongs to Patancheru of Medak district and was staying in a hostel in Vanasthalipuram. Madhu was a distant relative and allegedly developed a physical relationship. Madhu was staying in Saidabad.
