American comedian Jerry Lewis died on Sunday aged 91 of natural causes at his residence in Las Vegas, Nevada according to his publicist Candi Cazau.
Renowned for his slapstick humour, Jerry Lewis had a decade-long partnership with singer Dean Martin to form the Martin and Lewis comedy duo having debuted as a pair at Atlantic City’s 500 Club in 1946.
In a career spanning over 50 years, Jerry Lewis went on to act in more than 45 movies which included the The Nutty Professor. Jerry Lewis has been considered as the king of low-brow comedy. He also had success with fundraising telethons aimed particularly for raising money for victims of muscular dystrophy.
Jerry Lewis was married twice, first with Patti Palmer whom he divorced in 1980 after a relationship of 36 years. In 1983, he married SanDee Pitnick and had seven children from the two marriages along with adoptions. His children include the 71-year-old musician Gary Lewis.
Jerry Lewis movies include his 1957 debut movie The Delicate Delinquent, Cinderfella, The Ladies Man, The Nutty Professor, The King of Comedy, Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey! and the two movies in 2016 – The Trust and Max Rose.
