Alice Wells says Pakistan should play crucial role in ensuring Afghanistan’s stability

Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs stated that Pakistan need to play a crucial role in ensuring stability of Afghanistan.

She added that Islamabad should take serious measures to take action against terrorist organization and to ensure peace in the region.

Alice Wells addressed media and said that they are looking forward to work with new Pakistan government and added that they urge them to work more and to create pressure against terrorist groups.

She wrote: “We encourage Pakistan to take stronger steps to ensure that the Taliban comes to the negotiating table, rather than enjoying safe havens in the country. Both Pakistan and Afghanistan embarked an effort to improve their ties for negotiating a solidarity document which we strongly support”.

She added “We look forward to working with new Pakistan government. We urge them to do more and create pressure against terror groups. We welcome Imran Khan’s (Pak PM) words when he discussed the importance of having peace on both sides of border”.

She told that Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) allows them to build capacity within Indian Ocean region in more holistic way.

She said that she is hoping to engage with partners of the Indian Ocean Conference at the first India-US 2+2 dialogue that is planned to take place in New Delhi on September 6.
