P Ramkumar, believed to be the only accused in the Infosys employee Swathi murder case, has allegedly committed suicide in the Puzhal central prison in Chennai this evening after biting a live wire.
This is the second suicide attempt from P Ramkumar, earlier he had slit his throat just at the time of his arrest but survived following timely police action.
News emerging from the local media is that the alleged Swathi murderer had got hold of a live electric cable concealed in a switch board and thereby fainted. Co-prisoners raised an alarm to the jail authorities after noticing it.
Ramkumar’s pulse went down rapidly and he couldn’t survive this time even though he was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital.
On June 24 this year, an Infosys employee named Swathi was murdered in the Nungambakkam railway station in broad day light at around 6:30 AM. The murderer had stabbed her to death with a sickle and got away as no passerby could dare to do anything about it.
For a couple of hours, the body of Swathi was unattended on the railway platform. Massive public outrage poured in from all parts of India following this murder and pressure mounted on the Chennai police to track the mysterious murderer.
The Chennai police were swift in nabbing the assailant on July 1. This was based on the CCTV footage from a nearby building which grabbed pictures of a young thin and dark man frantically running away around the same time after the murder on the opposite side of the railway platform.
The cops released the suspect’s sketch which was identified and reported by the watchman of the same building where he was staying. Ramkumar was missing from his room since the murder and the police found significant evidence in his room.
It wasn’t difficult for the police there after as they successfully arrested the suspect in his native village near Tenkasi in Tirunelvi district through a surprise night raid.
Details emerged that the engineering drop out Ramkumar, who came to Chennai to try his luck in the film industry, used to stalk Swathi and was deeply infatuated by her.
Swathi had rejected him and according to Ramkumar had gone on to comment on his looks which made him furious and led him to commit the heinous crime.
