Aamir Khan wrestling movie Dangal inspired by a small newspaper bulletin

A small piece of article in a newspaper in 2012 has turned out to be the theme of Aamir Khan’s upcoming movie Dangal.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is about a true life story of two female wrestlers who have brought laurels to India and their father Mahavir Singh Phogat, the most instrumental figure of their sporting careers.

Superstar Aamir Khan has essayed the role of 55-year-old Mahavir Singh Phogat, who coached his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari in freestyle wrestling.

Geeta Phogat became the first ever female Indian wrestler to win a gold medal in the 55kg freestyle category of the 2010 Commonwealth Games while also becoming the first ever Indian woman to have qualified for the Olympics when she made it to the 2012 London Olympics.

Geeta Phogat’s sister Babita Kumari won the silver medal in the 51kg freestyle category of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Two years later, Babita Kumari went on to win the gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Dangal meaning in Hindi is wrestling and it is the second movie to be made exclusively on wrestling in the recent times after Salman Khan’s blockbuster movie Sultan.

Recently, Dangal trailer was launched by UTV Motion Pictures and it has become a sensation with over two billion views.

Dangal story revolves around Geeta Phogat, Babita Kumari and their influential father and also coach Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Dangal is about how a former wrestler wants to see that India wins gold in the sporting event. For that he is expecting that a son will be born to him whom he will train into a gold medal winning wrestler.

However, as fate would have it, Mahavir Singh Phogat is disappointed as his wife delivers him four girls and he resigns to the fact that he cannot produce a gold-medal winning wrestler.


One day, accidentally he realizes that his two elder daughters have it in them to make him realize his dreams when they happened to thrash a couple of boys black and blue. From then onwards, Dangal story movies into a completely new dimension as Mahavir Singh Phogat’s hard work in shaping his two girls as world class wrestlers pays him rich dividends.

Dangal Release Date | Dangal Cast

Dangal release date is expected to be December 23, 2016.

Apart from Aamir Khan, Dangal cast also features popular TV artiste Sakshi Tanwar of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii fame as Shobha Kaur, the wife of Mahavir Singh Phogat.

The lesser known duo of Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra play the screen role of Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari respectively in Dangal movie.

Dangal which is a biographical sports drama movie has been produced by Aamir Khan, his wife Kiran Rao and Siddharth Roy Kapur under the banners of Aamir Khan Production and Disney World Cinema.

It happens to be only the third directorial venture for Nitesh Tiwari who earlier directed two children-based movies in the form of the 2011 Hindi movie Chillar Party and the 2014 Hindi movie Bhootnath.

Dangal music director is Pritam while its lyrics have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

Kripa Shankar Bishnoi, a coach with the Indian women’s wrestling team, has trained Aamir Khan and the entire crew for the wrestling sequences.

Aamir Khan is believed to have undergone drastic body transformations to get into the shoes of Mahavir Singh Phogat while also perfecting the tough Haryani accent. Apparently, Aamir Khan had lost 22 kgs to play the character of a younger Mahavir Singh Phogat in the Dangal movie having beefed up on weight for the older character.
